  • 1/2 cup - Urad Dal (split black gram)
  • 2-3 - Dried red chillies (as per taste)
  • 2-3 - whole black pepper
  • 2 - large onions, roughly chopped
  • A pinch of Asafoetida
  • A small sized tamarind, a little bigger than a cherry
  • A few sprigs - curry leaves, optional
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make South Indian Onion Chutney:

    1. In 1/2 tsp of oil, saute black gram, chillies and pepper for 1-2 minutes till the aroma hits you.
    2. Now add chopped onions, salt and asafoetida and saute some more till the onions are soft.
    3. Just before switching off the flame, add the curry leaves and tamarind and saute for about 30 seconds.
    4. Now process this into a chutney consistency. Ideally this should be a little thicker than chutney.
    5. Spoon this up with warm idlis.
