  • 1/2 cup - Toor Dal (pressure cooked with Haldi powder and a pinch of asafoetida)
  • 5-6 - Dried red chillies (depending on your taste)
  • 1 - onion, chopped
  • 15-20 - Garlic Cloves (peeled)
  • Mustard Seeds
  • Curry leaves
  • Tamarind (a lemon-sized ball soaked in a cup of hot water)
  • How to Make Special Sambar:

    1. Put the mustard seeds in a kadai and wait until it splutters.
    2. Then add onions fry them until light brown.
    3. Add cloves, curry leaves and dried chillies.
    4. Pour some water so that the redness in the chillies comes out.
    5. Add the cooked dal and cook until the garlic becomes soft.
    6. Add the tamarind juice, and bring to a boil. Add salt to taste.
    7. Serve with rice, rotis or dosa.
