Ingredients

  • 1 cup groundnuts
  • 6 dry red chillies
  • 2 tsps urad dal (black gram)
  • 1/2 tsp methi/fenugreek
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 pinch of hing (asafoetida)
  • 1/2 tbsp Canola or other vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp tamarind paste
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Spicy Groundnut Chutney

  • Fry the groundnuts (not in oil, just dry fry, be careful they don't get burned).
  • Wait for them to cool down and remove the skins by rubbing your hands over them in a plate.
  • Bring the cooking oil to a boil, add the urad dal and fry for 30 seconds. Then add the chillies.
  • Gradually add methi, mustard and finally hing in that order.
  • Put the groundnuts, the fried mixture, tamarind paste and salt in a grinder, add a small amount of water and grind to a paste.
  • Serve with idlis or dosas.
