Ingredients

  • 4 cups - Rice flour
  • 1/4 cup - Urad dhal flour
  • 3/4 cup - Roasted gram flour (Pootukadalai), roasted and ground to a powder
  • 2 tbsp (Optional) - Coconut scraped
  • 2 tbsp - Channa dal
  • 2 tsp - Red Chilli powder
  • 2 tbsp - Butter
  • 1 tbsp - White sesame seeds
  • Water
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for Deep Frying
  • 1/4 tsp - Asafoetida
  • Curry leaves - a few.
  • How to Make Thattai Crispy Snacks:

    1. Soak the channa dal for 1/2 an hour.
    2. Mix the rice flour, urad dhal flour and the roasted gram flour.
    3. Drain the water from the soaked channa dal.
    4. Now add the channa dal to the flour.
    5. Add the curry leaves, salt, butter, red chilli powder, sesame seeds and coconut (if using).
    6. Knead into a firm dough.
    7. Grease a zip lock cover with oil.
    8. Take a lemon sized portion of the dough and flatten it with your hands.
    9. Now heat oil in a kadai.
    10. Drop the thattai into oil and fry on both sides until brown.
    11. Let it cool.
    12. Store in an air tight container.
    13. Serve with tea.
