  • 3 cups - Idli Rice
  • 1. 5 cups - Toor Dal
  • 1/2 cup - Urad Dal
  • Salt
  • 1/2 tsp - Mustard Seeds + Urad Dal
  • 1/2 tsp - Channa dal
  • 5 - Curry leaves
  • 1/4 cup - Onions (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp - Oil
  • How to Make Toor Dhal idlis:

    1. Soak urad dal separately and rice with toor dal for at least 3hours.
    2. Grind the urad dal to a soft and fluffy batter.
    3. Grind the soaked rice and toor dal as a slightly coarse batter.
    4. Mix everything with enough salt.
    5. leave overnight for fermentation.
    6. While making idlis, heat oil and add mustard seeds, urad dal and channa dal and let them splutter.
    7. Add the chopped onions and curry leaves and stir until the onions turns translucent.
    8. Add these tempered spices to the toor dal idli batter and give a stir.
    9. Grease the idli moulds with oil and pour the toor dal idli batter in the moulds.
    10. Steam cook for 10 minutes.
    11. Serve hot with hot and spicy gravies or chutneys!
