  • 2 cups - Rice
  • 3/4 cup - Tur Dal
  • Peanuts
  • 4-5 flakes - Garlic
  • Ginger - a small piece
  • 4-5 tbsp - Kopra (Dried Coconut) sliced/powder
  • 1 - Tomato - cut into cubes
  • Coriander
  • Cumin Seeds, Mustard Seeds (Jeera and Rai)
  • Red Chilli powder
  • Garam Masala (optional)
  • Oil to cook
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Tur Dal Khichari:

    1. Wash the tuvar dal. Boil with peanuts till the dal is half cooked.
    2. Meanwhile, grind garlic, ginger, khopra together.
    3. When the dal is half cooked, pour some oil in the pan in which you want to make the khichari.
    4. When the oil is heated, add the mustard and cumin seeds.
    5. After they splutter, put the garlic-ginger-khopra paste in it and mix it well in the oil.
    6. Add tomato, garam masala, chilli powder and mix well.
    7. Now pour the boiled tur dal-peanuts and rice into this.
    8. Pour water as required.
    9. Add salt. Place a lid and let the khichari cook.
    10. It will take 15 mins and if using a cooker - cook until 4 whistles.
    11. Garnish with coriander when ready.
    12. Serve hot with pickle, papad.
