Ingredients

  • For tadka:
  • 4 or 5 tsp - groundnut oil
  • 1/2 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 5 or 6 - Curry leaves
  • 2 or 3 - green chillies, slit
  • 3 piece - chopped Garlic
  • 1 small piece - Ginger
  • For the paste:
  • 1/2 - grated Coconut
  • 3 or 4 piece - Garlic
  • 1/2 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 cup - water
  • 1/2 tsp - Coriander leaves
  • 1 cup - toor / Arhar dal
  • Salt to taste
  • How to Make Varaan Bhaat:

    1. Boil toor dal with a drop of oil and turmeric powder.
    2. Prepare a paste of coconut, garlic and cumin seeds and keep aside.
    3. Heat oil in pan. Prepare a tadka of mustard and cumin seeds, curry leaves, slit green chillies, garlic and ginger.
    4. Now add the coconut paste to the pan along with turmeric powder and salt.
    5. Saute for 5 minutes till the tadka turns red.
    6. Add the boiled dal and water and wait for one boil.
    7. Garnish with coriander and serve with rice.
