Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup - Moong dal
  • 2 cups - Banana steam (chopped)
  • 1 Onion(chopped)
  • 1 Tomato (chopped)
  • 1 tsp - Mustard seeds+Urad dal
  • 2 Dry red chillies
  • 1/4 tsp - Asafoetida powder
  • 1/4 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • Few curry leaves
  • Salt
  • Oil
  • To roast and grind:
  • 1 tbsp - Coriander seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - Fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp - Cumin seeds
  • 5 Dry red chillies
  • 3 tbsp - Grated coconut

How to Make Vazhaithandu - Banana Stem Kootu

  • Roast and grind all the ingredients given under the list 'to roast and grind' as fine powder.
  • Meanwhile pressure cook the moong dal, chopped banana stem with turmeric powder and salt with enough water for up to 3 whistles.
  • Keep aside until the steam gets released.
  • Heat enough oil, splutter the mustard seeds, urad dal, asafoetida powder, red chillies until brown.
  • Now add the chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, curry leaves and saute until the onions turn translucent.
  • Add the cooked dal-banana stem mixture and prepared spice powder to the onions. Cook everything for few minutes and turn off the stove.
  • Serve hot with papads along with rice or simply with rotis and dosas.
