  • 2 or 3 medium size - Cucumber
  • 1 - Onion
  • 1/4 cup - Channa Dal
  • 1/4 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - Chilli powder
  • 1 tsp - Black gram
  • 1 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • Curry leaves
  • Coriander
  • Salt
  • Oil for seasoning
  • How to Make Vellarikkai Koottu:

    1. Soak channa dal in water for 1 hour.
    2. Clean and cook in a pressure cooker (up to 1 whistle).
    3. Cut cucumber finely. Chop onions finely and keep it aside.
    4. Heat oil in a pan. Add black gram and mustard seeds.
    5. When mustards splutter, add curry leaves, chopped onion and fry until the onions are slightly brown.
    6. Add the cucumber and fry for 3-4 minutes.
    7. Add the turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt.
    8. Pour a cup of water and add the boiled channa dal.
    9. Cook in medium flame for 15 minutes or until the cucumber is tender.
    10. Add more water if required.
    11. Garnish with coriander and serve with rice or chapattis.
