How to Make Yellow Dal

  • Pressure cook dal with about 2 cups of water and 1/2 the onions till soft.
  • Cool and open the cooker after 15 minutes.
  • Add salt and sugar (optional) and mix well.
  • Meanwhile finely chop garlic, ginger and green chillies.
  • Heat oil or ghee in a kadai. Add cumin.
  • When it splutters, add curry leaves and asafoetida.
  • Add the remaining onion, garlic, ginger and green chillies.
  • Fry till onions are light brown. Add chilli powder.
  • Add the dal and simmer for 2 minutes.
  • Serve garnished with coriander leaves.
  • Goes well with rice or chapatti.
