Karthika Deepam or Karthigai Deepam is a festival of lights that commemorates the bonding between brothers and sisters. Rows of clay Oil lamps are lit in every house. The lighted lamp is believed to ward off evil forces and usher in prosperity and joy
Primarily celebrated in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and Kerala, the festival falls in the Tamil month of Kaarthigai and occurs on the day when the moon is in conjunction with the constellation Karthigai (Pleiades) and Pournami.
This year, Karthigai Deepam falls on November 23, 2018.
