  • 3/4 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp - cumin seeds
  • 1 sprig - curry leaves
  • 1.5 tbsp - ghee
  • 1 medium - tomato, diced
  • 1 - small onion, cut thin and long
  • Turmeric - a pinch
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 - small chillies
  • Coriander leaves - a few sprigs
  • 1/2 cup - toor dal

How to Make Basic Dal Fry

  • Pressure cook dal for 12-15 mins and keep aside
  • On a pan, heat ghee and splutter mustard seeds
  • Add the cumin and curry leaves and leave for a few seconds
  • Add the onion and chillies and fry till the onion turns brown and then add the tomato pieces and fry till tender. Add turmeric powder and fry for a few more seconds
  • When done, add the dal (mash it a bit), salt and water as necessary and leave it for some time to simmer.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves
