Ingredients

  • 1 cup - black channa
  • 1 - cloves
  • 1/2 inch piece - cinnamon
  • 1 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp - chilli powder
  • 1/2 tbsp - garam masala powder/channa masala powder
  • 1 - onion medium sized chopped lengthwise
  • 2 tsp - ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 - tomato
  • A few - curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp - oil
  • 1/2 small size - lemon
  • For grinding:
  • 1 medium sized - tomato
  • 1/2 cup - coconut grated
  • 1/2 tsp - fennel (sombu)

How to Make Black Channa Masala

  • Grind the ingredients listed with a little water to a fine, thin paste.
  • Pressure cook channa with a pinch of turmeric powder and keep aside.
  • In a kadai, add oil and temper with cloves and cinnamon.
  • Add ginger garlic paste and fry for 2 mins.
  • Add onion, half tomato, curry leaves and fry well till onions turn light brown.
  • Add boiled channa, chilli powder, channa masala/garam masala powder and mix well.
  • Now add the ground coconut paste, saute till all is combined.
  • Allow it to boil and switch off when oil separates.
  • Squeeze lemon juice while serving.
