  • 8 slices - fresh bread
  • 250 g - string beans, chopped
  • 1 - onion, finely chopped
  • 1 - small potato, finely chopped
  • 2-3 pinches - asafoetida powder
  • 2-3 pinches - turmeric powder
  • 2-3 flakes - garlic, crushed
  • 1 inch piece - ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp - soya sauce
  • 1 tsp - red chilli sauce
  • 2 pinches - sugar
  • 1 tbsp - butter
  • 2 tbsp - cheese
  • salt to taste

How to Make Chawli Sandwiches

  • Microwave or steam the string beans until they soften up (but are firm enough to bite).
  • Heat butter in a pan. Add asafoetida, salt, sugar, ginger and garlic and saute until transparent.
  • Add the beans and all the remaining ingredients, except the bread slices and cheese.
  • Stir-fry and let the excess moisture evaporate. Take off the heat, cool it slightly and fold it in cheese.
  • Butter each slice sparingly on both the sides.
  • Put a spoonful of the prepared veggie between two slices. Toast until crisp and golden in colour.
  • Cut into two triangles and serve hot with ketchup or green chutney.
