  • 1 cup - Bengal gram (Channa) Dal
  • 1/2 cup - tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 kg - brinjal
  • 10 to 12 green chillies or to taste
  • 8 flakes garlic, peeled and crushed
  • 2 red chillies, broken into pieces
  • few curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp - turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - mustard
  • 1 tsp - cumin seeds
  • salt to taste
  • 3 tbsp - oil

How to Make Chettinaad Brinjal Kootu

  • Cook Bengal gram Dal till soft. Mash lightly. (It must be a coarsely mashed lump)
  • Cut brinjals into halves, along the length and slice thinly.
  • Heat the oil in a Kadai. Add mustard and cumin.
  • When they splutter, add garlic and fry till golden brown.
  • Add red chillies, fry for few minutes.
  • Add green chillies, curry leaves and turmeric powder.
  • Add brinjals slices and fry well. Add tomato and salt.
  • Cook till the vegetables are soft. Add the Dal and little water.
  • Simmer for few minutes . (This dish is of semi-solid consistency)
  • Serve hot with steamed rice and Rasam.
