Ingredients

  • cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • coriander seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • pepper - 1/2 tsp
  • clove 1
  • cinnamon a small piece
  • cardamom seeds 2
  • onion - 1/2 cup, chopped
  • ginger a thin slice
  • chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  • turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • chopped tomato - 1/2 cup
  • red gram (Tovar) Dal - 1/2 cup
  • vegetable/chicken stock - 1 ltr
  • salt to taste
  • lime juice to taste
  • coriander leaves to garnish

How to Make Dal Shorba

  • Dry roast the first six ingredients, cool and powder.
  • In a pressure cooker, combine all the ingredients (including the spice powder) except the salt, lime and coriander.
  • Pressure cook for 10 minutes. Cool and blend in a mixer.
  • Add more water or stock, if a thinner soup is desired.
  • Add salt and heat till it begins to boil.
  • Serve sprinkled with lime juice and garnished with a few coriander leaves.
