Ingredients

  • Red gram dal - 1/2 cup
  • Bengal gram dal - 1/2 cup
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • Chilli powder - 2 tsp
  • Ginger - 2 tsp, minced
  • Grated coconut - 2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Dry red chillies - 4
  • Yellow pumpkin - 1 cup, cubed
  • Brinjal - 1 cup, cubed
  • Potato - 1 cup, cubed
  • Curry plantain - 1 cup, cubed
  • Raw papaya - 1 cup, cubed
  • Sugar - 1 tsp
  • Oil or ghee - 1 tbsp
  • Panch phutana (cumin, mustard, fenugreek, fennel, black cumin) - 2 tsp
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Dalma

  • Wash both the dals.
  • Add 5 cups of water, turmeric powder, chilli powder and ginger and boil until cooked.
  • Meanwhile dry roast coconut and set aside.
  • Now roast the cumin and red chillies and grind them.
  • Add all the vegetables to the dal and cook.
  • When half done add the salt and sugar.
  • Cook for another 5-10 minutes.
  • Now heat oil or ghee in a pan and add the panch phutana.
  • When it splutters, add it to the dal and mix.
  • Garnish with the coconut, cumin and chilli powder.
  • Serve hot with steamed rice.
