  • 1 tbsp. ghee
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 fresh green chilli, chopped
  • ½ tsp. turmeric
  • 75 gms. split red lentils (masoor dal)
  • 1 cup water
  • 400 gm. Tomatoes, chopped
  • ½ tsp. sugar
  • Lemon juice, to taste
  • 200 gms. plain boiled rice or 2 potatoes, boiled (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves to garnish

How to Make Easy Lentil Soup

  • Heat the ghee in a large pan and fry the onion, garlic, chilli and turmeric until the onion is translucent.
  • Add the lentils and water and bring to the boil.
  • Reduce the heat, cover and cook until all the water has absorbed.
  • Mash the lentils with the back of a wooden spoon until you have a smooth paste.
  • Add salt to taste and mix well.
  • Add the tomatoes, sugar and lemon, and reheat the soup.
  • To provide extra texture, fold in the plain boiled rice or boiled potatoes, cut into cubes.
  • Garnish with coriander if you like and serve hot.
