Ingredients

  • 1 pound halibut, sea bass or cod
  • ¼ tsp. mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp. ground cardamoms
  • 1 tsp. turmeric
  • 3 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tbsp. coriander leaves, chopped
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 ½ tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 3 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 3 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • ¼ tsp. chilli powder
  • ¼ tsp. cumin
  • ½ cup yoghurt

How to Make Fish Curry Bengali Style

  • Cut fish into serving pieces. Rub with paprika and ½ tsp. turmeric; salt lightly.
  • Heat oil and brown fish. Remove and set aside.
  • Fry onions and garlic until brown, adding more oil, if necessary.
  • Add chilli powder, cumin, mustard seeds, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and ½ tsp. turmeric.
  • Fry for a minute or two. Put in tomatoes, coriander leaves and water.
  • Simmer until tomatoes are tender. Add salt and yoghurt.
  • Put in fish, cover and simmer for about 10 minutes, watching carefully.
  • Use mustard oil, if available.
