  • 10 steamed and cooled rice idlis
  • 1 cup - onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup - peanuts, roasted and crushed coarsely
  • 2 tbsp - chilli powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup - cheese, grated
  • 1/4 tsp - mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp - sesame seeds
  • 1 tbsp - oil
  • 2 tbsp - ghee or melted butter

How to Make Grilled Idlis

  • Slit idlis into halves horizontally, keeping tops and bottoms together.
  • Heat a saucepan, add oil.
  • When hot, add mustard, sesame seeds .
  • When they splutter, add onion, stir-fry till light brown.
  • Add peanuts, chilli powder, salt and stir.
  • Brush idlis with fat all over.
  • Place lower part on a tray.
  • Spread some prepared mixture on it.
  • Place top half on it. Press lightly.
  • Sprinkle some cheese over top.
  • Repeat for remaining idlis and mixture.
  • Place on a rack under hot grill till cheese starts sizzling.
  • Serve hot with coconut chutney or curd.
