Ingredients

  • Baked beans - 1 can
  • Tomato paste - 7 to 8 tbsp
  • Onion - 1 chopped fine
  • Green chilli - 1 chopped fine
  • Garlic - 5 to 6 pods chopped fine
  • Ginger - 1/2 inch piece (optional)
  • Cinnamon - 1/2 inch stick or 1/2 tsp powder
  • Bay leaf - 1
  • Clove - 2 to 3
  • Elaichi seeds only - few (optional)
  • Saunf powder - 1.5 tsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • Jeera - 1 or 2 tsp
  • Jeera powder - 1 tsp
  • Olive oil or canola oil - 3 to 4 tbsp
  • Cilantro - a bunch, chopped fine
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Indian Style Baked Beans

  • In a pan, add oil, jeera, bay leaf, cinnamon.
  • Once the jeera is brown, add finely chopped onion, garlic, ginger and green chilli.
  • Meanwhile, dry grind cinnamon, saunf, cloves and elaichi.
  • After about 10 mins on medium heat, the onions should be golden brown.
  • Now add the dry ground powder and fry it for 7-8 mins.
  • Then add the tomato paste and a bit of chopped cilantro.
  • Also add the red chilli powder and turmeric powder
  • Now fry this till the tomato paste changes colour and the raw smell of the tomato paste disappears.
  • Now add the baked beans with its liquid.
  • Cover and let it cook on low heat for about 10 mins.
  • Now add jeera powder and saunf.
  • Continue to cook covered on low flame.
  • Add water if it gets too thick. But make sure you let the beans cook on low heat, covered, for 15-20 mins at least.
  • In the last 5 mins, add cilantro and salt.
  • Serve with rotis.
