Ingredients

  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Green Gram (Moong) Dal - 1 cup
  • Coconut - 1/2
  • Ghee - 1 tbsp
  • Cashew nuts - 2 tbsp, broken into pieces
  • Oil - 4 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Cardamom - 4
  • Cinnamon - 4 pieces
  • Ginger - 1 tsp, chopped
  • Green chillies - 6 to 8, chopped
  • Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Water - 6 cups
  • Sugar - 1 tbsp
  • Raisins - 2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Khichidi

  • Wash the rice and dal and drain.
  • Ease the flesh out of coconut and cut into small pieces.
  • Heat ghee in a small frying pan and fry cashew nuts and coconut pieces till golden brown.
  • Set aside.
  • Heat oil in a thick bottomed vessel.
  • Add cumin, cardamom and cinnamon.
  • When cumin seeds crackle, add rice, dal, ginger and green chillies.
  • Fry for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add water, salt and sugar.
  • Mix well.
  • Add fried cashew nuts, coconut and raisins.
  • When the water begins to boil, cover the vessel with a lid and lower the heat.
  • Let the rice and dal cook till soft.
  • Serve hot.
