Kozhakattai is a healthy and tasty dumpling which is made as a spicy savoury or as a sugary sweet. Kuthiravali Kara Kozhakattai is a savoury dumpling that is made with a nutritious millet- Barnyard millet which is called as 'Kuthiravali ' in Tamil. 

This protein-rich millet is cooked along with mustard, urad dal, channa dal, red and green chillies, asafoetida and grated coconut. It is then steamed in an idli steamer and best served with coconut chutney.  

These steamed dumplings can also be enjoyed as a healthy breakfast or a wholesome dinner.

  • Kutharavali-1 cup
  • Mustard-1/2tsp
  • Channa Dal-1/2 tsp
  • Urad Dal-1/2 tsp
  • Red Chillies-2
  • Green Chillies-1
  • Asafoetida-1 pinch
  • Grated Coconut-4 tsp
  • Curry Leaves-1 sprig
  • Oil-2 tsp
  • Salt-to taste
  • Water-3 cups

How to Make Kuthiravali Kara Kozhakattai

  • In a pan, add oil followed by mustard, urad dal, channa dal, red and green chillies.
  • With that, add asafoetida and curry leaves . Add salt and water and allow it to boil.
  • Add the Kutharavali millet now and cook till water is absorbed. Allow the mixture to cool and make soft balls.
  • Steam these balls in an idli steamer and serve with coconut chutney.
