Mexican Sweet Bun is a traditional, tasty snack from Mexico. Generally, referred to as 'Concha' meaning shell-shape, these buns are pleasingly attractive and impart a fantastic flavour. This yummy bun is quite simple to make - all it needs is flour, milk, butter, eggs and yeast. 

These sweet buns can be topped with a unique mixture - 'Streusel mix' made of sugar, butter, egg yolks and flour. Mexican Sweet Buns can be had with your afternoon tea or as an evening snack!

Ingredients

  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 6 tbsp. butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 package yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • Oil for greasing
  • To Make Streusel for Sweet Buns:
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 3 ½ tbsp. butter
  • 2/3 cup flour
  • 2 egg yolks

How to Make Mexican Sweet Buns

  • Combine flour, yeast, sugar and salt in a bowl. Heat milk. Add milk with butter to flour mixture.
  • Beat eggs and add to mixture. Stir to make a soft dough.
  • Knead for 5 to 10 minutes and cover with plastic wrap and towel. Let rest 20 mins. Punch down.
  • Divide into 14 pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and flatten to a 3 inch circle.
  • Slash top to make shell shape. Brush lightly with oil.
  • Top with ¼ cup streusel mixture. Pat slightly into dough. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 24 hours.
  • To bake, preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Let buns stand, uncovered, at room temperature for 10 minutes. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Note: Method for Streusel: Mix sugar and flour. Cut in butter with pastry blender until fine crumbs. Stir in egg yolks with fork until well blended.
