  • For the dough:
  • 2 cups rice flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp. ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ tsp. sugar
  • For the filling:
  • 1 freshly grated coconut
  • 250 gms. jaggery
  • ¼ tsp. cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp. poppy seeds
  • A few almonds, crushed

How to Make Modak

  • To make the dough, take water in a pan, add ghee, salt and sugar and bring to boil.
  • Add the rice flour and mix immediately to avoid lumps.
  • Remove in a dish and mix when warm and form a dough.
  • Keep covered with a wet cloth.
  • For the filling:
  • Roast the coconut on a low flame till light brown.
  • Add the jaggery and mix well.
  • Add the other ingredients and mix. Let it cool.
  • If you find the mixture is dry, just pulse it once in a mixer.
  • Make small balls with the dough, make a chapatti and put the filling.
  • Seal it to form a Samhain of modak.
  • In a steamer, place a banana leaf and steam the modak for 15-20 minutes.
  • Remove gently and let it cool. Serve it.
