  • Tamarind - size of a big lime
  • Prawn - 250 g (shelled and deveined)
  • Button mushroom - 200 g
  • Oil - 1/2 cup
  • Onion - 2 cups, chopped
  • Chilli powder - 2 tsp or to taste
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Mushroom and Prawn Phanna Upkari

  • Soak the tamarind in 2 cups of hot water for 15 minutes and extract the juice.
  • Sprinkle the prawns with 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder.
  • Wash and drain after 10 minutes.
  • Cut the mushrooms into quarters.
  • Heat oil and fry the onions until light brown.
  • Add the prawns and mushrooms. Sprinkle with salt and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add chilli powder and coriander powder and fry for half a minute.
  • Add 1/2 cup of tamarind juice and simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Add the remaining tamarind juice and simmer until the gravy gets the consistency of thin cream.
  • Serve with steamed rice, idli or dosa.
