  • 1 cup - Raw rice
  • 1 cup - Idli rice
  • 1/2 cup - Urad dal
  • 1 tsp - Fenugreek seeds
  • Other ingredients:
  • 1 cup - Sugar
  • 1/2 cup - Moong dal
  • 1/2 cup - Grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp - Cardamom powder (optional)

How to Make Olaiappam -Sweet Idli

  • Soak both rice and urad dal with fenugreek seeds separately at least for 5 hours.
  • Drain it and grind the rice coarsely with urad dal to form thick batter.
  • Let the batter ferment and double in volume by resting overnight.
  • Roast the moong dal until they turn brown.
  • Add the cardamom powder (optional), sugar to the batter and mix them well.
  • Grease the idli plates and fill them with batter, sprinkle moong dal and grated coconut over them.
  • Steam cook for 10 minutes.
  • Serve hot with chutney.
