Ingredients

  • Large onion - 1
  • Tomato - 1 big or 2 small
  • Garlic - 3 or 4 pods
  • Turmeric -1 tsp
  • Green chilli - 6-7
  • Tamarind - a small piece
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil - 5 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Split urad dhal - 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida - 1 pinch
  • Curry leaves - a few

How to Make Onion and Tomato Chutney

  • Cut the onions and the tomatoes.
  • Heat 2 tsp of oil in a kadai and saute the onions, tomatoes, garlic, chillies until pink.
  • Cool, and grind this with the turmeric, salt and tamarind. Add a little water to grind.
  • Heat the remaining oil in the kadai and splutter the mustard seeds.
  • Then add the urad dhal, asafoetida and curry leaves.
  • Grind well.
  • Now add the ground chutney to the kadai and cook for 5 mins.
  • Served with hot with dosa or idli.
