  • 1 - pavakkai (bitter gourd), cut into round slices.
  • 1 cup - tur dal, pre cooked.
  • tamarind - lemon sized.
  • asafoetida - a pinch.
  • 1.5 tbsp - sambar powder.
  • 2 or 3 - green chillies.
  • 1/4 tsp - turmeric powder.
  • salt to taste.
  • To garnish: coconut gratings.
  • 1/2 tsp - mustard.
  • 1 tsp - urad dal.
  • 1/4 tsp - cumin.
  • curry leaves.
  • oil to fry.

How to Make Pavakkai Pittlai

  • In a kadai, heat a little oil and fry pavakkai well and keep them aside.
  • In a wide vessel, add tamarind to water with salt and turmeric powder and allow to boil. When boiled, add asafoetida and sambar powder and give another boil.
  • Then add the pre cooked tuvar dal and boil. Now sambar is ready.
  • Then in a little oil, fry mustard, coconut, urad dal, curry leaves, jeera till coconut becomes red. Add this to the sambar. Also add the pre-fried pavakkai.
  • The hot pittlai is ready.
