Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups - yellow moong dal or red masoor dal (washed and soaked for about 30 to 40 minutes)
  • 5 cups - vegetable or chicken or meat stock
  • 3 tbsp - olive oil
  • 1 - large onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 - celery stick (chopped)
  • 5 - medium sized tomatoes (peeled and roughly chopped)
  • juice of a lemon
  • ½ tsp - red chilli powder
  • salt to taste
  • freshly ground pepper (as per taste)

How to Make Plain Lentil Soup

  • Heat oil in a heavy bottomed vessel.
  • Add the onions and celery.
  • Saute 1.5 till the onions become soft.
  • Add the stock.
  • Mix well.
  • Add the lentils.
  • Allow it a boil.
  • After a boil, simmer for 20 to 25 minutes or till the lentils are soft.
  • Add the tomatoes, salt, pepper, red chilli powder and lemon juice.
  • Cook further on a medium flame for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Serve hot.
