Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup - toor dal (pressure cooked with haldi powder and a pinch of asafoetida)
  • 5-6 - dried red chillies (depending on your taste)
  • 1 - onion, chopped
  • 15-20 - garlic cloves (peeled)
  • Mustard seeds
  • Curry Leaves
  • Tamarind (a lemon-sized ball soaked in a cup of hot water)

How to Make Special Sambar

  • Put the mustard seeds in a kadai and wait until it splutters.
  • Then add onions fry them until light brown.
  • Add cloves, curry leaves and dried chillies.
  • Pour some water so that the redness in the chillies comes out.
  • Add the cooked dal and cook until the garlic becomes soft.
  • Add the tamarind juice, and bring to a boil. Add salt to taste.
  • Serve with rice, rotis or dosa.
