Goan cuisine is known for its classic sea food dishes and one such traditional fish recipe is Goan Fish Curry. 

Fresh fish is cooked with prepared coconut paste and savoury ingredients like cumin seeds, coriander seeds, turmeric powder, tomatoes, green chillies and tamarind pulp.  

Make sure that the fish is cooked well in the gravy mixture and you can relish it hot with steamed rice and any Indian bread.

Ingredients

  • 5 whole dry red kashmiri chillies or 3 dried red chillies
  • ¾ cup coconut grated
  • 1 tsp. cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp. coriander seeds
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • ¼ cup oil
  • 1 large onion (150 gms.) grated
  • ½ tsp. turmeric pwder
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • 4 green chillies, slit
  • 15 gms. tamarind, soaked in ½ cup hot water for 15 mins and pulp extracted
  • 1 tbsp. salt
  • 1 kg. fish cut into 2 ½ cm. thick pieces

How to Make Tasty Goan Fish Curry

  • Grind red chillies, coconut, cumin and coriander seeds into a paste, adding a little water from time to time.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add onion and fry till golden brown. Add coconut paste and turmeric powder.
  • Fry till oil shows separately (approximately 5 mins) stirring constantly. Add curry leaves, tomatoes and ¼ cup water.
  • Cook till tomatoes are pulpy, stirring occasionally. Add green chillies, tamarind pulp, salt and remaining water (1 cup).
  • Bring to boil. Add fish. Stir gently, cover and cook till fish is done.
