Ingredients

  • Idli rawa - 1/2 cup
  • Mustard - 1 tsp
  • Half-broken channa dal - 1 tbsp
  • Half-broken urad dal - 1 tbsp
  • A pinch of hing
  • Carrot (skin peeled) - 1
  • Peas - few pieces
  • Beans - 4
  • Tomato - 1
  • Capsicum - 1
  • Ginger - 1 small piece
  • Oil - 3 tbsp
  • Curd - 1/2 cup
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Salt to taste

How to Make Traditional Upma

  • Wash and chop the vegetables and ginger.
  • In a heavy-bottom vessel, add idli rawa, 1.5 glasses of water and half the curd.
  • Mix well and allow it to boil on low flame for 10 mins.
  • Add extra water if needed and stir continuously.
  • Simultaneously, pour oil in a pan, add mustard, chana dal, urad dal and fry till dal turns golden brown.
  • Add the vegetables, hing and curry leaves and fry well.
  • Sprinkle some water, close the lid and cook on low flame.
  • Stir occasionally.
  • Once the vegetables are cooked, add the cooked idli rawa, salt to taste and the remaining curd.
  • Stir well and cook for 10 mins. Add water if too dry.
