Ulutham Paruppu Puttu is a savoury breakfast that is made with the 'wonder dal variety' - Urad dal (Ulutham Paruppu). Urad dal is known to be richest source of protein and Vitamin B. Many of the Indian dishes have this highly nutritional dal which is considered to be a good source of folic acid, iron, magnesium, potassium and lot more components, which are significant for women health.

The soaked urad dal is finely blended with asafoetida, green chilli and red chilli. The well steamed, tasty urad dal mixture is then stir fried with oil and mustard. The smoothly grated coconut is finally added for some extra taste.

  • Asafoetida-1/4 tsp
  • Salt-to taste
  • Curry Leaves-1 sprig
  • Mustard-1/2 tsp
  • Oil-3 tsp
  • Grated Coconut-3 tsp

How to Make Ulutham Paruppu Puttu

  • Soak urad dal in water for 20 minutes. Drain and place it in a blender.
  • Add salt, asafoetida, green chilli, red chilli and grind well.
  • Mix the mixture well and then, you can grease an idli steamer. Place the mixture in the moulds and steam for 10 minutes.
  • Once cooled, crumble them with your hands. In a pan, add oil and mustard followed by curry leaves.
  • Add the crumbled urad dal mixture. With that, add grated coconut. Mix well. Once it is done, serve hot immediately.
