  • 2 or 3 medium size - Cucumber
  • 1 - Onion
  • 1/4 cup - Channa Dal
  • 1/4 tsp - Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp - Chilli powder
  • 1 tsp - Black gram
  • 1 tsp - Mustard seeds
  • Curry leaves
  • Coriander
  • Salt
  • Oil for seasoning

How to Make Vellarikkai Koottu

  • Soak channa dal in water for 1 hour.
  • Clean and cook in a pressure cooker (up to 1 whistle).
  • Cut cucumber finely. Chop onions finely and keep it aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add black gram and mustard seeds.
  • When mustards splutter, add curry leaves, chopped onion and fry until the onions are slightly brown.
  • Add the cucumber and fry for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt.
  • Pour a cup of water and add the boiled channa dal.
  • Cook in medium flame for 15 minutes or until the cucumber is tender.
  • Add more water if required.
  • Garnish with coriander and serve with rice or chapattis.
